Actress Danielle Harris on Directing?

I came across an interview Danielle Harris (Halloween 4 & 5, Rob Zombie's Halloween, Hatchet II) did with MTV GEEK and I found this quote quite interesting.

"...I know that it’s short-lived. That’s actually why I applied to the AFI to the Women’s Directing Program because that’s the next step for me. There’s no female directors in the genre, but all these leads and it’s mostly written by men, so what the f***? Why are there not more women doing this?
That’s kind of where I want to start in sort of making that transition. I’ll always be an actor and I will always do these movies, but they may just be few and far between. But like I said in the beginning, I only like taking things that I’m excited about, and even if some people don’t understand why I do it, a lot of stuff I do, I do for no money because I just want to be a part of it. ... "

 Could this be the next step for many female leads in the horror genre?  I think it's interesting.  I am a huge supporter of more female directors.  As you've seen, I have worked with Actress/Director Sage Hall twice this year.  And both short films have turned out to be great successes.
  Tara Cardinal had a big hand in making her film The Legend of the Red Reaper look the way it does,  then there is the new short film from Devanny Pinn titled CatARTic and Shannon Lark has directed the short Lip Stick and many others.

 I think that Harris has the right idea.  Make your own films women.  You know what you want to see, you know what you want to play.  If you're not seeing it on screen, then step behind the camera and make it happen.  There are tons of industry people that will help and want this shift!

 It does seem like the Independent, outside the studio system actress' are the ones doing this though.  It's very rare to see a female horror genre A-lister get behind the camera.

JAMES FRANCO Drag's it up for CANDY magazine

OK.
NO, I had no idea there was a Magazine named Candy for the Transgendered, cross-dressing community.

James Franco is barely recognizable here.

Apparently this is the Second issue of Candy, but I have no idea when the first issue was released.

Candy is ... 'The first fashion magazine ever completely dedicated to celebrating transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny, in all its manifestations.'
I swear our film 'Candy.' has absolutely nothing in common with this magazine other then the title and similar font style.  Damn it!

No, I think it's great that there is a fashion magazine out there catering to this community of creative individuals.  I'm just mildly pissed I didn't know about this before going forward with naming the short film 'Candy.'  -_-

'Candy.' at SAC HORROR

One of the best things to happen to this film yet was having the SAC HORROR/SCI-FI convention believe in what we are doing.

Not only did the amazing Richard Zerga and his daughter Kristi Zerga at Legends of Heroes & Villians sponsor our appearance but they really took care of us at the event.  THANK YOU.

The people were wonderful and Sage, Jenny, Grady & I were overwhelmed by the audience at our screening.  I was not expecting to have a 30 minute Q&A for a movie that is just over 8 minutes.  But we all appreciated the questions and the amazing enthusiasm from so many of the audience members!

making 'Candy' continues...

Have you ever said "I have the best idea for a film."?
Have you ever actually followed through with that idea?
If you have, then you probably found out that it's not as easy as people make it seem.

Right now I am back in Florida and in the bowls of finishing my first short film 'Candy'. Though people have said, many times, don't bother with shorts, they're not really films, I am here to tell you they are all wrong.

I never saw 'Candy' as anything but a short film. Quick and to the point. Stylized more like a 50's sitcom then anything. But with the edgy style of Hitchcock or even a Twilight Zone episode.

'Candy' is a labor of love. I have always wanted that 1950's life. The 'Leave it to Beaver' perfection. Knowing full well it could not happen, the next best thing is to create it. I am quite sure this will not be my only visit to that time period in my career.

I want the audience to forget about every myth & genre specific plot they've seen in the past when they sit down to watch 'Candy'. Horror started in a place where the thrill and anticipation was a giant part of the plot. Let's be honest here. The genre has become over run by blood and tits. There is nothing wrong with gore films, I enjoy them. I just decided that I wanted to bring us back to a place where the genre had class, sexy style and an allure.

Right now, I am forging forward with my production and I can not thank everyone involved up to this point enough.

Currently we are still finishing up the edit and making sure things are clean. We will not have this out to the public until September (we hope) and I am working on what Venue's will be hosting a screening.

Yes we are still accepting donations to finish this film. It's a tireless effort on all are parts.

I'm also quite pleased to say that Stop Starring Clothing and TiGi hair care have been so kind to give us some products for our shoots. Thank you to these great companies for supporting an indie film!

An Apple a Day...

I want Candy.

Here I go, into uncharted waters. I've helped start projects before but never my own.

As a creative person, I am constantly putting so many things together and putting so much energy into projects but I never know which ones will work out or which ones will just cost me money I don't have to spend.

Candy came to mind in October of 2009 while I was in Los Angeles. The idea was only going to take a day or two and I just wanted to create something.

I was inspired by Linda Lawson, who explained to me her dislike for horror films and how she had never watched one. When I said "But you're an actress. How could you not want to dress up like a witch or a demon on Halloween?" She simply said "I don't like the scariness of the holiday and I don't enjoy horror films because the represent only the scary." or something to that effect.

Regardless, I then became interested in doing a short film that Linda could watch or that she could act in. Not a Gore film, not a Completely normal Horror film by any means. Something Different.

I leave it at that.

You can judge for yourself after it comes out. You may like that I've stepped away from conventional ideas to bring a twist on something we all may be familiar with or maybe you'll hate it. To each his/her own.

I'm looking to this short as a way to bring to life a new character and a new way to look at the genre of Horror. With my talented & wonderful friend Sage Hall starring in the film, her production company StarFruit Productions, taking the reins & Wheat shooting it, we have a mixture that is sure to bring about a great product. I am confident in this.

Pre-Production has now begun and hopefully you will come along for the Sweetest Ride in Horror.
